ADOPTING COMMUNICATIVE METHOD FOR THE TEACHING OF FRENCH IN NIGERIA: AN UNDENIABLE ALTERNATIVE

Abstract


The main purpose of teaching French in Nigeria is to break the obvious linguistic barriers borne out of inabilities to interact freely with our francophone neighbours with whom we dwell on day-to-day activities along our borders. In the international arena too, Nigeria needs experts in French to enable the country exchange scientific ideas, trade, knowledge, innovation, etc. for the much needed transfer of technology for individual and national development. The aim and objective of this paper is to highlight, elaborate and explore how French Language could be well taught, that is, the method/ the pedagogical approach to be adopted by the teachers to enhance, promote and arouse the interests of the learners for better understanding and result-oriented academic exercises. Emphasis would be laid on communicative method of teaching language generally and French language teaching in particular. Mention would also be made of the traditional, direct and indirect methods. To conclude the study, it was recommended that only French language must be used as means of communication in the class, the teachers must introduce exercises that are appropriate, putting into consideration the students life experience and students must also participate in the teaching/learning process.
