TEACHERS CLASS ROOM MANAGEMENT SKILLS AND ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE OF COMMERCIAL STUDENTS IN SECONDARY SCHOOLS IN OYO STATE

Abstract


The study sought to determine the relationship between teachers' classroom management skills and academic performance of commercial subject students in senior secondary schools in Oyo State, Nigeria. It specifically looked into the relationship between skills such as the use of instructional materials, classroom control, classroom arrangements, among others, and academic performance of commercial students in secondary schools. Two research questions and two hypotheses tested at 0.05 level of significance guided the study. The study adopted the correlation research design. While the samples of the study which were drawn from four local government areas of Oyo federal constituency comprised of 280 senior secondary students and 50 teachers all from 15 public schools, data for the study were gathered using a 30 items self constructed questionnaire made along a modified 4-point type rating scale of strongly Agree = 4, Agree = 3, Strongly Disagree = 2, Disagree = 1. Data analysis was done using mean, standard deviation and t-test statistics at a 0.05 level of significance. Findings revealed that there is a statistically significant relationship between teachers classroom management and students performance in commercial subjects in Oyo State, Nigeria. Based on the findings, it was recommended, among others, that school administrators should ensure that regular seminars, workshops and conferences are organised for teachers on effective deployment of classroom management. Other factors that contribute to effective classroom management such as age, experience and gender should be given priority attention in Oyo State secondary schools. The study concluded by discussing the importance of teachers as a strong pillar in the educational industry that should be accorded great appropriate attention wherever issues of national development is brought into fore.
